NIBR updated online database of Korean Indigenous species

NIBR announced that it has updated the online database of 49,027 Korean indigenous species and published the data on the “CBD-CHM Korea” website (www.kbr.go.kr) and “Korean Biodiversity” website (species.nibr.go.kr). The 49,027 species information is now available online starting from July 2 2018.

The updated database is composed of newly added 2,024 species taxa, scientific name, Korean name, author’s name, and year of publication.

NIBR has managed the online database by using the ‘Korean Taxonomic Serial Number’ (KTSN), which makes much easier for people to search and retrieve data on genetic and ecological information of the species.

Since each ministry and relevant institution has managed their species’ lists with different taxonomic numbering systems, it is difficult to integrate Korean species data. However, KTSN enables us to manage the species data efficiently.

NIBR plans to build the Application Programming Interface, “OpenAPI” based on KTSN, which is a publicly available application programming interface that provides developers with programmatic access to a proprietary software application  so that the NIBR’s database is interoperable with other institutions’ database systems.

Dr. Min Hwan Suh, Director General of Biological Resources Research Dept., NIBR said: “Our database has become a standard to share Korean biodiversity data with other domestic institutions.” “It is essential to update and manage the database of Korean indigenous species to secure sovereign rights over our biological resources since the Nagoya Protocol has entered into effect,” he added.
