NIBR Published an Illustrated Guide of 127 Korean Mammals in English

NIBR announced that it published an illustrated guide of 127 mammals inhabiting the Korean Peninsula, titled “Mammals of Korea (English edition)” on 2nd January.

Although several books on mammals of Korea have been published, this is the first Mammal of Korea in English.

The book provides extensive coverage of 127 species of Korean mammals from their ecology with habitats, through history of Korean mammalogy and the conservation efforts, to the mammal fossils in Korea. The detail of species accounts includes their systematic remarks, description, natural history, conservation, and management sections.

This book introduces the most updated taxonomy and systematics on Korean mammals with its geographic distribution. Also, the systematic remarks section lists all history of scientific names of each species.

In description section, morphological characters of each mammal species are explained with illustrations. It also covers field signs, measurements, similar species, and dentition of each species.

The book gives information on the activity, food habits, foraging, nest behavior, reproduction, and mortality factors of each species in the natural history section.

In the section of conservation and managements, the book describes what efforts have been made to conserve and protect Korean mammals both domestically and internationally, and how to manage or utilize mammalian resources with economic values.

Dr. Lee, Byoung yoon, Director General of Biological Resources Research Department, NIBR said: “I hope the English version of Mammals of Korea can contribute to securing our sovereign right over biological resources through promoting the current status of Korean mammals, relevant information and Korean biodiversity to the world”.

“Mammals of Korea” will be distributed to major libraries, research institutions, relevant government agencies and universities at home and abroad.
