NIBR and KPAA signed MOU for the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol

NIBR singed MOU with Korea Patent Attorneys Association (KPAA) on 19 October 2018 to support Korean biotech companies that comply with the Nagoya Protocol.

This MOU is to provide Korean companies with practical and legal advice and consultation services as “Act on Access to and Utilization of Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing” (Genetic Resources Act) became effective in August 2017 to implement access and benefit sharing (ABS) requirements under the Nagoya Protocol.

NIBR has provided ABS consultation services for many years. Since the overall questions and contents of the consultation have become intensified and complicated, supports from legal experts and patent attorneys are increasingly needed.

Under the MOU, NIBR will establish “ABS legal support team” that consist of patent attorneys, scholars and biotechnology professionals to share patent issues, intellectual property rights, ABS related information and consultations as well.

Dr. Lee, Byoung yoon, acting president of NIBR said: “NIBR will enhance its ABS supports and services for companies to reduce their burden and address challenges when implementing the Nagoya Protocol”.
