NIBR Published “The Guidebook of Korean Endangered Wildlife (2017 revision)”

NIBR published “The Guidebook of Korean Endangered Wildlife (2017 revision)” on 25 May 2018 that comprises a total of 267 endangered species in Korea.

The Korean endangered wildlife has been increased from 246 to 267 based on the revision of “Enforcement Rule of Wildlife Protection and Management Act” on 29 December 2017.

Among the 267 endangered wildlife species, 25 species including Columba rupestris, Hynobius yangi, Cybister chinensis have been newly designated as Class II.

The first edition of “The Guidebook of Korean Endangered Wildlife (2017 revision)” was published in 2014. The 2017 revised book has added the above mentioned 25 species excluding 4 species, Bibasis striata, Scelidotoma hoonsooi, Abeliophyllum distichum, and Polygonatum stenophyllum

NIBR has conducted nationwide research on the habitats and populations of Korean endangered wildlife. The research outcomes were reflected on the revised book with photos and detailed information such as ecology, taxonomy, distribution and habitat type of the 267 endangered species and the status of legal protection and Korean Red Lists.

Dr. Min Hwan Suh, Director General of Biological Resources Research Dept., NIBR said: “We expect the revised book can contribute to conservation of Korean biodiversity by raising public awareness on our endangered species”.

NIBR has distributed the revised book to major libraries, research institutions, and relevant government agencies across the country so that many people can get information on Korean endangered species. The book (PDF file) is also available to download at https://species.nibr.go.kr.
