The Korean Indigenous Plant, Cyperus flavidus Turns into a Skincare Product

The recent NIBR’s research has identified that the plant extracts derived from Cyperus flavidus have anti-pollutionary efficacy, offering protection against the harmful impact of environmental pollutants on skin health. NIBR has transferred the relevant technology to Korean cosmetic companies for commercialization.

Since 2018, NIBR has researched the skin protective effects of 50 Korean indigenous plants against environmental pollutants including aldehyde compounds.

The research found that extracts of Cyperus flavidus lowered cell cyto-toxicity induced aldehyde compounds in half. The extracts also reduced the release of histamine that causes allergic symptoms by more than 63%.

2 patents on Cyperus flavidus extracts were granted by Korean Intellectual Property Office in October 2020, and NIBR researchers will also submit the research findings to the international open- access journal, Biomolecules.

“Our research on Korean indigenous species sheds light on the value of our wild plants at home and abroad, and therefore it provides an opportunity for Korean cosmetics companies to raise their competitiveness in global cosmetic markets”, said Yeon Jae Bae, president of NIBR. “We will continue to carry out research to identify useful Korean biological resources to support the Korean bio industry.”
