The 12th Korea ABS Forum was held

National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) holds the 12th Korea ABS Forum, a briefing seminar for the pharmaceutical industry about ‘sample contract’ required to fulfill commitments under the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the and Equitable Sharing of Benefits (ABS) Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity, on April 28 at GS Tower, Seoul.

The forum is aims at guiding the pharmaceutical industry how to respond to the ‘Access to and Benefit Sharing of Genetic Resources’ when utilizing genetic resources of other parties to the Nagoya Protocol, and helping reinforce disease control against climate change and conserve biological diversity.

The forum will introduce the latest updates and trends on the Nagoya Protocol with experts from various fields including the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization, pharmaceutical companies as well as legal and academic circles. The participants will discuss on the sample contract regarding the ‘Access to and Benefit Sharing of Genetic Resources.’

And, the results of survey on perception of the members of the Pharmaceutical Industry Association, Cosmetics Industry Association and Biotechnology Industry Organization about the Nagoya Protocol will be shared. NIER expects that the use of sample contract between parties to the Nagoya Protocol will increase, so preparation is urgently needed.

In particular, the sample contract to be introduced at the forum will serve as an important guide to Korean pharmaceutical companies that are likely to face difficulties when they use genetic resources of other countries.
