The Pictorial Book, “Invertebrates of Dokdo Island: IV. Porifera” Published NIBR announced that a pictorial book titled “Invertebrates of Dokdo Island: IV. Porifera” was released on 19 April 2021 covering its recent research on sponges that live along the coast of Dokdo and Ulleungdo islands in Korea. The research was conducted between 2019 and 2020. During medieval times in Europe, sponges belonging to the Phylum Porifera have been used as bath sponges. Their body structure acts as a habitat and shelter for other organisms. There are approximately 400 sponge species reported in Korea. The pictorial book illustrates a total of 35 sponges confirmed from the NIBR research covering biological information including their scientific names, shapes, habitats, distribution and so on. Through the research, NIBR has newly found a total of 13 sponge species including Smenospongia dokdoensis, Halichondria ulleungensis, Leucandra sp. off the coast of Dokdo and Ullengdo islands as native or undescribed species. Further scientific study on these Korean native sponges is planned. The book, “Invertebrates of Dokdo Island: IV. Porifera” will be distributed to major Korean libraries, research institutions, and relevant government agencies. It is also available on NIBR’s website (www.nibr.go.kr) in PDF format. |
